Rules and Guidelines
Talks will be scheduled in a round-robin fashion, generally following
alphabetical order. The list of speakers and pre-assigned dates will be
posted to the internal mailing list before the beginning of each
semester.
If you are unable to give a talk at your scheduled time due to
travel, etc., it is your responsibility to find a replacement
(e.g., by swapping with someone else). If you need to find a replacement
speaker, please do so well in advance to allow your replacement
sufficient time to prepare. We will adjust the schedule as needed to
accommodate conference practice talks, joint Pitt/CMU meetings and
external guest speakers.
If you would like to schedule a practice talk for an upcoming
conference (highly recommended to get internal feedback before the real
thing) or invite an external speaker, simply let the seminar organizer
know.
When selecting a topic, the most important overall guideline is
that it should be of interest to the group. The type of talk you
give is flexible. Generally we prefer one of the following (if you would
like to do something else, please check with the organizer first):
- A formal talk; could be a recent or upcoming conference talk.
- An informal "chalkboard" presentation of ongoing/in-progress work.
- A presentation of a paper by some other research group. Should be
polished and use slides.
- Literature survey / tutorial.
Please send the title of your talk at least two weeks before
your scheduled date, and an abstract at least one week before.
